Site News: List of Powertoys Added

You might have noticed a new tab on our site next to Note Talkers titled “List of Powertoys“.  We are in the process of creating a simple list of all the powertoys we have collected, know about, and write about.  As we keep finding more, we will add to the list.

Later on, we will add small descriptions of the powertoys and sort them into categories.  Please check it out and tell us what you think. :)

Poll – Reviews of Powertoys

I have wanted to review the different powertoys for a while now, but I do not know if it is something people want to read. I am also unsure where to post the reiviews (on this site, on Note Talkers, on both sites).  So, I decided to ask the readers for their input by making a poll (right side).

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Sid :)

Site News: Fixed the RSS Feed

I was just looking around the site to make sure things worked properly when I noticed that the XML feedburner link on the sidebar was lined to the XML feed of our sister site Note Talkers. I have fixed the error and apologize for any confusion it might have caused.

FireFox/Flock “Clip To OneNote” Extension updated on AdminID.com

Upgrading to FireFox 1.5.0.1 causes the “Clip to OneNote” Extension to stop working.

I tried to contact GmxLee about it last Friday when I first became aware of it (Tablet PC Buzz Forum), but have not heard back yet.

Since I’ve had multiple comments and email since then… I’ve taken the liberty of updating the copy that I host. It won’t auto-update since the UpdateURL points to his site, but you can re-install it after upgrading FireFox to 1.5.0.1 (or any version below that).

Modified Install on AdminID.com…  http://adminid.com/powertoys/GmxLee/clipnote.xpi

  • Note: Only the install.rdf line for “MaxVersion = 1.5+” for FireFox and Flock is modified.

GoogleNewsReader to OneNote PowerToy

GoogleNewsReader is a OneNote powertoy which runs in the system tray and helps you to archive regular Google news topics and custom Google news searches inside OneNote.

Developer’s Notes: CAUTION – For serious* OneNote users only.

  • The OneNote API forces OneNote to be opened whenever any content is written into it. Hence you must be willing to have your work suddenly interrupted while GoogleNewsReader is updating content into OneNote. Or you could leave OneNote open all the time :-)
  • The application “screenscrapes” the Google News website, since this seems to provide a better interface to use inside of OneNote instead of using the RSS provided by Google. For the same reason, I cannot guarantee the app will continue to work if Google changes its website interface.
  • When there are many pages under a single folder, OneNote becomes a little slow

Poll – What OneNote PowerToy would you most like to see?

The Poll for “What OneNote PowerToy would you most like to see?” is now available in the sidebar.

I’ve added items from comments and emails, but you can also add your own.

Please check the comments on this post for updates about finding/modifying PowerToys that can do these functions. I’ll also post a roundup when the poll closes.

Contest News (or at least a plausible excuse)

A January 31st comment by Chris Pratley on his OneNote PowerToys Redux post (originally posted June 3rd) has the following tidbits…

  • The Marketing Guy responsible for the Contest switched teams.
  • One of the twelve OneNote Developers now has it, but has been very busy with OneNote 12.
  • They have been working with the developers to get out a few bugs in the submitted Toys.
  • “Real Soon Now”
  • He has also tried to contact Darron of AnalogReality.com and had no luck.

That is just a summary. There is a little more in the post, but I don’t want to repeat the second line! :) Just Kidding Chris.

He also posted on his blog yesterday about OneNote “12″ and the Tablet PC which has a nice list of improvements and explanations.

In Development – OneNote to WordPress

I’ve had this as a draft since Tuesday morning, but Windows With Ink posted first…

Windows With Ink has switched his blog to WordPress and made a test post using OneNote 12′s export, but no details are provided yet as to the process.

  • Update:  Export as XML –> XML-RPC –> WordPress (in this post)

I’ve been playing with OneNote 2003 sending through email to WordPress and plan to start modifying the Postie Plugin. More details and a link to the test site in this post on Note Talkers.

Also, please welcome Sid of “A Student’s Guide to Tablet PCs” to this site. We have started to collaborate on this site, as well as create a new site… http://www.NoteTalkers.com.
