New Poll posted: OneNote marketing slogan for keyboard users?

The Unknown OneNote Guy met a woman in the coffee shop who thought OneNote was only for Tablet PC Users. Read his post for the full details, but here’s one of the last paragraphs…

It seems to me that the community and Microsoft needs to somehow change the general perception of OneNote and increase the general public awareness of OneNote. Maybe we need a 12-step program. Maybe we should have the world write on a blackboard (do those even exist anymore?) one-hundred times “OneNote works with a keyboard. OneNote is more than just a note-taking applicatoin.” Maybe that is too harsh. How about a marketing campaign? That is the ticket – instead of doing a Power Toy competitiontion how about a marketing competition?

Sounds like a good idea to me, so I created a poll in the sidebar. OneNote Guy’s three suggestions are there and you can add your own. (no need for addresses though, there is no prizes being awarded!)

Updated: Omea’s Send to OneNote Plugin

Clyx Studios has a Beta release of the Send To OneNote plugin for JetBrains Omea that supports OneNote 2007. It is only available by joining their community, but according to their blog post about the OneNote API it will be officially released soon.

From the beta version’s download page…

Release Notes:

Version 2.0 adds the following features:

  • now works with Microsoft OneNote 2007 as well as Microsoft OneNote 2003 SP1
  • additional resource types are now supported including Notes and Weblinks (to send a weblink, right-click it in the resource list and use the OneNote context menu)
  • The OneNote page date and time is now set to the date and time of the posted resource
  • Additional Omea fields have been added to the information sent to OneNote and displayed on the OneNote page.

Known Issues

  • When using Outlook 2007, the body text of HTML format messages may not appear in OneNote. A workaround is to select the text within Omea’s preview pane before clicking the Send to OneNote button – this has the added benefit of sending across fully formatted text.

Corrections

Earlier this week, I jumped the gun and wrote about the Ink Blogging Tool going into Beta 2 Testing.  I thought it was a powertoy because Matt had been working on a OneNote to WordPress powertoy.  However, this is not the case.  First, the Ink Blogging Tool was created by Ed Holloway.  Second, it is not a powertoy for OneNote but a plug-in for MS Live Writer.  The plug-in IS going into Beta 2 and can be found here.  No word if the plug-in will support OneNote and I will check with Matt about his powertoy.
Thanks Ed for correctin my mistake.

Daily Journal in OneNote 2007

I was manually recreating the functions of the Daily Journal PowerToy using the same format and a “Links” page with a hyperlink to the section, but came across a tip by Ilya Koulchin this morning…To get the Daily Journal PowerToy to work in OneNote 2007…

  • Have to use the first open Notebook
    • Create a Section Group named “Journal”
    • Inside of that create a Section Group named “2006″
    • Start up OneNote Daily Journal and press Windows-J for it to create a Section for the month and a page for today.

Ink Blog Tool Goes into Beta 2 Testing

Matt of Windows With Ink is continuing to work on his Ink Blog Tool for OneNote 2007 and is currently testing the Beta 2 version of it. So far, it is very impressive and I can’t wait to test it out myself. In other news, he has joined the GottaBeMobile team and changed his personal blog.

OneNote 2007 Xml Viewer

The Unknown OneNote Guy has created a quick and dirty OneNote 2007 Xml Viewer

I say quick and dirty because it comes with the following warning…

A few things to note about this application – I would not consider this a solid app. There was little if any design, no refactoring, and the User Interface portion was beat into submission with a stick – sorry I am a Web Developer and more behind the scenes then out in front. Big disclaimer here – please don’t use this in your mission critical applications. You get what you pay for in this application. It is meant for entertainment purposes only!

Despite this, I think it is awesome. Trying to get access to the XML in OneNote is not as easy as the rest of Office 2007 and this is a great starting point for developers wanting to get familiar with the raw data. Hopefully it will spur some more import/export tools.

OneNote2006.com = Create your own posts about OneNote

In order to keep OneNotePowerToys.com more “pure”, Sid and I created NoteTalkers.com to discuss all the note taking applications we use. While trying to decide on a domain name, I bought OneNote2006.com (before the “Office 2007″ announcement) and haven’t done anything with it.

Prompted in part by Slacker Manager’s “Free For All Friday” and OneNote Guy’s “The OneNote Community” posts, I have installed WordPress and opened it up so everyone who registers is an Author.

Hopefully this will allow the OneNote Community a common place to post, so go register and start posting all your vast knowledge of OneNote for others to read.

FireFox/Flock “Clip to OneNote”

The official “Clip to OneNote” extension has been mentioned on a few blogs lately, but has yet to updated by Gmx Lee for FireFox 1.5+. So here is a repost of the modified install I created a while back. I installed it in FF 1.5.0.6 (and 2007 Beta2) successfully today, but have not retested with Flock.
Modified Install on AdminID.com…  http://adminid.com/powertoys/GmxLee/clipnote.xpi

  • Note: Only the install.rdf line for “MaxVersion = 1.5+” for FireFox and Flock is modified.
