GBM How-To: Add OneNote 2007 Printer as Right-click Send To option

Rob Bushway…

When I saw Warner’s post this morning about the new Send To OneNote 2007 Powertoy, I was a little disappointed that it did not print the file to OneNote. It does send the file as a shortcut to OneNote, but it wasn’t what I was really after. Being a heavy OneNote user on my Tablet PC, I’m always looking for some short-cuts to get documents and stuff printed into OneNote.

So, I went off on a goose chase to figure out how I could easily add a OneNote 2007 printer as a Send-To option, and I figured it out! Having this option will allow you to right click any printable file, go to the Send To option, and choose the OneNote 2007 Printer.

Daily Journal in OneNote 2007

I was manually recreating the functions of the Daily Journal PowerToy using the same format and a “Links” page with a hyperlink to the section, but came across a tip by Ilya Koulchin this morning…To get the Daily Journal PowerToy to work in OneNote 2007…

  • Have to use the first open Notebook
    • Create a Section Group named “Journal”
    • Inside of that create a Section Group named “2006″
    • Start up OneNote Daily Journal and press Windows-J for it to create a Section for the month and a page for today.

Official Powertoy: My Font Tool for Tablet PC

There are many powertoys out there, but only three of them are official powertoys from Microsoft (Send to OneNote from Internet Explorer, Send to OneNote from Outlook, and My Font Tool for Tablet PC). We have already written about the first two.  So, today we bring you the third one in case you didn’t know about it. This powertoy only work with Tablet PC because the user has to input letters and symbols from the stylus. It is a pretty neat and fun powertoy. Check it out here.

Microsoft’s Description:

“Tired of using regular fonts? This PowerToy for Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition converts your own handwriting into a TrueType font. Use this font in OneNote and in other Windows-based programs to make typed text appear as though you had written it by hand. Whether you prefer calligraphy or chicken scratch, in three easy steps you can create your own personal typeface.”

I will be testing this powertoy for the next few weeks followed by my review.

PONGen – Programmable OneNote Notebook Generator

What does it do?

PONGen grabs the current TechEd 2005 Orlando Breakout schedule from an RSS feed, and generates multiple OneNote notebooks containing the latest Breakout Session schedule.

What happens when you run PONGen?

PONGen is a console application.  You are not asked for any input in this version.  PONGen opens the OneNote Importer object, creates a tab called General Info, and adds a page containing the full TechEd Orlando agenda for the week as published at the TechEd Conference Agenda page.  A tab for each day of the conference (Sunday 5th – Friday 10th) is then created, and a daily Agenda page is added to each tab.

The RSS feed of the schedule of Breakout Sessions is then downloaded from http://www.msteched.com/content/BreakoutRSS.aspx, and loaded into an in-memory dataset.  The description field of each session is parsed using regular expressions to extract the date, time slot and location, which are also added to the dataset.  This dataset is then used to generate a page for each time slot, which contains all the Breakout Sessions that are available during that time slot.

From the “TechEd Schedule imported into OneNote” post

Hackable: Look in the TechEdScheduler.xml for opportunities to customize.  Sections currently wired to the code are , , and .  Right now, the stuff listed in and is hard-coded for the TechEd feed, and will most likely cause errors on other feeds.

Contest Entry = OneNote Favorites

Note: This may not be released seperately. It was originally part of “Daily Journal”, but Andy split it out for the Contest. He may incorporate it back into the Daily Journal in a future release.

I am posting this as informational. It was one of the 1000+ submissions to the Contest, so now I only need to find (1000+ minus 1) more links to submitted PowerToys.
